            <p>Few Subjects of similar Nature have afforded more Entertainment to the Public than the
          late Voyages to the <region>Southern <geogFeat>Ocean</geogFeat></region>; their Design, and the Degree of Success that has
          attended it, are now generally known: But whatever Advantages either the <name type="myth">Spirit of
          Enterprise</name>, or commercial and <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">Scientifick Interests</rs> may derive from some Discoveries that
          have been made in that distant Hemisphere, it is much to be lamented, that the <rs type="org">innocent
          Natives</rs> have been Sufferers by the Event<note type="author" anchored="true">"It were
            indeed sincerely to be wished, says <persName>Mr.
            F<hi rend="smallcaps">orster</hi></persName>, that the Intercourse which has lately subsisted between <orgName>Europeans</orgName> and
            the <orgName>Natives of the <region>South Sea Islands</region></orgName>, may be broken off in Time, before the <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">Corruption
            of Manners</rs> which unhappily characterizes civilized Regions, may reach that <rs type="org">innocent Race
             of Men</rs>, who live here fortunate in their <rs type="concept" subtype="pac">Ignorance</rs> and <rs type="concept" subtype="pac">Simplicity</rs>: But it is a
            melancholy Truth that the <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">Dictates of Philanthropy</rs> do not harmonize with the <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">Political
            Systems</rs> of <region>Europe</region>." <persName>F<hi rend="smallcaps">orster</hi></persName>'s Voyages, V.I. P. 247-8. Dub. Ed.</note>: The <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">imaginary
          Value annexed to <rs type="object">European Toys and Manufactures</rs></rs>, and the <rs type="interact" role="sex">Ravages of a particular Disorder</rs>
               have already injured their <rs type="concept" subtype="pac">Morals</rs> and their <rs type="concept" subtype="pac">Peace</rs>; even the <rs type="object" subtype="euro">Instruments of Iron</rs>, which so
          much facilitate the ordinary <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">Operations of Industry</rs>, have been used as <rs type="object">Weapons of
             Destruction</rs>, or perverted to the Purposes of <rs type="concept" subtype="pac">Ambition</rs> and <rs type="concept" subtype="pac">Revenge</rs>. The Truth of this
          Observation appears from the Use which the <rs type="person">Head of a sequestered Family</rs> at <placeName>Dusky Bay</placeName> in
          <placeName>New Zealand</placeName> intended to make of the <rs type="object">Axes</rs> he received (<bibl>See F<hi rend="smallcaps">orst</hi>. V. I. p. 142.</bibl>)--from the
               Magnitude and Destination of the <orgName><rs type="object">Fleet</rs> of <placeName>O'Taheite</placeName></orgName> assembled at <settlement>Oparee</settlement> in <date when="1774-04">April 1774</date>,
          about seven Years after the <rs type="interact" subtype="imp">Discovery of the Island by <persName>Captain W<hi rend="smallcaps">allis</hi></persName></rs> (<bibl>ibid V.II P.
             51-5.</bibl>)--and also from the <rs type="interact" subtype="conflict" role="blood">Commotions excited by <persName>Tootahah</persName></rs>, who had been Sovereign of it when
               <persName>Captain C<hi rend="smallcaps">ook</hi></persName> first arrived there in <date>1769</date>: <rs type="interact" subtype="conflict" role="blood">One of these, which was occasioned by <rs type="interact" subtype="trade">an Abuse
          of the Presents he had received</rs> (ibid. P. 80.) deprived him in the End, of his Kingdom and
          his Life.</rs> <rs type="interact" subtype="conflict">And a similar Revolution, a little before this, had stripped <persName>Oberea</persName> of that
          <rs type="concept" subtype="pac">Wealth and Power</rs></rs> which so eminently distinguished her at <persName>Captain W<hi rend="smallcaps">allis</hi></persName>'s Arrival; she was
          then <rs type="person" ana="Oberea">Queen of <placeName>O'Taheite</placeName></rs>, and treated him with peculiar <rs type="concept" subtype="pac">Generosity</rs> and <rs type="concept" subtype="pac">Regard</rs>: A
          Remembrance of <rs type="interact" subtype="affin">their mutual Affection</rs>--a Sense of her subsequent Misfortunes--and a
          <rs type="concept">Patriotic Feeling for the Fate of her Country</rs>, are the Basis of the following <rs type="object">Poem</rs>.</p>
            <p>Before I conclude, it may not be improper to observe, that the <orgName>Natives of <placeName>O'Taheite</placeName></orgName>,
          whose singular <rs type="concept" subtype="pac">Customs and Manners</rs> are occasionally described, may be considered by many
               who have only read <bibl><persName>Doctor H<hi rend="smallcaps">awkesworth</hi></persName>'s
            Compilation</bibl>, as fitter Subjects for <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">Ridicule</rs> than <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">Panegyrick</rs>; but whoever peruses <bibl>the Memoirs
          given of them by <rs type="org" ana="Cook Forster">the latest Voyagers</rs></bibl>, will find that the more <rs type="org" ana="Tahitians">these hospitable and happy
          Islanders</rs> are known, the more pleasing they appear: He will also find that <rs type="interact">the <rs type="interact">irregular Gratification of
            their Passions</rs>, which has been regarded as the most exceptionable Part of their
            Character</rs>, was <rs type="concept">transmitted through <rs type="person" ana="Hawkesworth">a false Medium</rs>
           to our View</rs>: It must be notwithstanding allowed that <rs type="org">in <hi rend="smallcaps">this</hi>, as in every other
          Country</rs>, there is <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">a Diversity of Prospects</rs> which may afford <rs type="person">the Wit</rs>, as well as <rs type="person">the
          Buffoon</rs>, an <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">Opportunity of taking an unfavourable Survey, and of sporting with the Defects
          of unassisted Nature</rs>: <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">Entitled to the same Liberty</rs>, I have chosen what, I am persuaded,
          every <rs type="person">Advocate for Humanity</rs> would choose, to look through <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">a different Perspective, which
          has presented me with several Objects in the Lives and Circumstances of <rs type="org" ana="Tahitians">these
          Fellow-Citizens of the World</rs>, that even European Grandeur might envy or admire</rs>: It is not
          however my Intention to hazard, farther than what is consistent with the <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">Propriety</rs> of my
          Plan, <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">any invidious Comparison between the Happiness of Natural and Civilized Society</rs>,
          which might lead me into <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">a Deviation from local Images</rs>, and that <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">Precision</rs> and <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">Perspicuity</rs>, which in <rs type="object">a descriptive Poem</rs> of
          this Nature, I think necessary, and have endeavoured to preserve; how far I have succeeded
          or failed in this Design, is submitted with Respect, to the <rs type="concept" subtype="euro">Judgment and Indulgence of the
             candid <rs type="org">Public</rs>.</rs></p>
